Rider Expectations & Independence

At Miller Pine Meadows, we believe that true horsemanship includes responsibility, awareness, and independence around horses.

Riders are expected to take an active role in their learning by:

  • Catching and preparing their own horse

  • Grooming and tacking up independently

  • Cleaning up after themselves and their horse

  • Being ready and on time for lessons

These expectations are an important part of the learning process and help students develop partnerships and connection with the ponies and horses tying into safety while riding.

Motivation & Progression

As riders become more independent and consistent in their responsibilities, they are rewarded with increased riding time and greater opportunities in their training. Progress is earned through effort, responsibility, and willingness to learn.

Younger Riders (5-7 yo)

Younger students may require parent or guardian support when first beginning. As they develop skills and confidence, they are gradually encouraged to take on more independence in their horse care and preparation.

Our goal is to build capable, self-reliant horse people who can confidently care for and work with horses from start to finish.

Benefits of Riding Horses

1. Builds Confidence and Responsibility

Horse riding helps children develop self-confidence as they learn to handle, care for, and ride a large animal. Taking responsibility for a horse also encourages maturity and independence.

2. Improves Physical Skills and Coordination

Riding strengthens balance, core stability, posture, and coordination. It engages the whole body and helps children develop better body awareness.

3. Supports Emotional Growth and Focus

Working with horses teaches patience, calm communication, and emotional control. It also improves focus and listening skills, since riding requires attention and clear instruction.

Little Riders Program
(5-7 yo)
$125

Little Riders will have four 1-hour riding sessions per month.
The first half they will require direct supervision of the trainer assistant while they are encouraged to assist catching, grooming and getting ready for their lesson.

Participation in riding preparation allows children to overcome their fears while having fun bonding with a pony.
The second half of the hour session is being lead by an assistant.
Parent involvement is recommended and strongly encouraged!
We work with the child at their comfort level while gently encouraging progression and independence.

The benefits of starting early

Horse riding helps children aged 5–7 build balance, coordination, and core strength in a fun, engaging way. It also develops confidence and independence as they learn to communicate with and guide a large animal.

Working with horses teaches responsibility, patience, and empathy through daily care and interaction. Additionally, riding supports focus and emotional regulation, making it a great activity for both physical and mental development.

It also encourages time outdoors and a connection to nature, which supports overall well-being. Being part of a riding environment helps children develop social skills, teamwork, and a sense of community.
